West Virginia Healthy Resources Directory
This online directory of resources was developed for use by West Virginia residents who are seeking to refer children, parents, patients to available personnel and facilities in their area that can assist them with nutrition and physical activity. Healthcare professionals, health educators, and others with an expertise in the areas of nutrition and physical activity are encouraged to submit information so it can be included in the directory. Through a continued effort, we hope to locate individuals and facilities in all areas of the state.

West Virginia University Extension: 4-H Clubs & Camp Programs
Every day, in every West Virginia county, the West Virginia University Extension Service helps people help themselves by providing reliable information, education, and problem-solving programs. WVU Extension is the main outreach and public service arm of West Virginia University. With an office, educators, and staff in all 55 counties, Extension’s timely educational programs are relevant to community needs. WVU Extension’s programs partner with the statewide CARDIAC project. County educators receive support and guidance from state subject matter specialists to carry out family and youth programs. Programs available to help CARDIAC families include: Family Nutrition Program, Healthy Camp Challenge, 4-H Health Initiative, Dining with Diabetes, A New You: Health for Every Body, and Love Your Heart Talks. The availability of these programs in a county depends on local staffing and resources. Delivery methods are tailored to audience ages, abilities, and interests.
For information, call your local WVU Extension Service Office, 304-293-2796, or visit our webpage: www.wvu.edu/~exten/

CARDIAC Bootcamp
Developed by nurse practitioner Jill Cochran, CARDIAC Bootcamp was designed for children who have been identified as high-risk for obesity and other cardiovascular disease related problems. As a local clinical intervention, CARDIAC Bootcamp is based out of the Robert C. Byrd clinic in Greenbrier County. The children involved receive ongoing clinical care with a culturally appropriate educational program (WVU’s Extension Services’ CARDIAC Challenge Program) for the child and a guardian. This dynamic program emphasizes healthy food and preparation, exercise, self-motivation and general family fun.

Body Works
BodyWorks is a healthy lifestyle program to guide parents and their 9-14 year old girls in making small changes in daily habits. With 10 weekly sessions and a free toolkit for each family, Bodyworks arms participants with support and resources to improve family nutrition and activity habits. The toolkit includes a guide for the mothers, a teen magazine, a weekly planner, a food and fitness journal, a recipe book and a DVD on shopping and cooking. The daughters are encouraged to attend the sessions, while the main focus is for mothers to become better role models and establish a home environment to sustain healthier behaviors. Recent BodyWorks programs have been conducted in Jefferson and Monongalia counties. BodyWorks was developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women's Health.
